Don’t Get Caught Unaware

June 23, 2020

Flash flood may suddenly occur due to intense rainfall. Driving can be incredibly dangerous during a flash flood. Here’s a list of flood safety tips:

  • Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, move to higher ground if you can do so safely. Call for a tow truck immediately, if need be, to avoid causing a congestion on the roads when the water recedes
  • If you’re caught and unable to get out of the flooded area; and the flood water is passable, you should engage the first gear, proceed at low speed and maintain high acceleration to prevent water from entering the exhaust. This keeps the engine turning faster, which reduces the chances of stalling
  • Do note that 30cm of water can stall your car and 60cm of water can carry away most vehicles including SUVs
  • If you need to get out of the vehicle and move to higher ground, do not walk through moving water as it’s impossible to judge its depth. 15cm of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk in areas where the water is not moving
